Description

  • Tivoli Storage Manager: is a centralized, policy-based enterprise solution that backups and restores the following operating systems: MAC OS X, Linux, Solaris, HP-UX, IBM AIX, AS400 and Microsoft Windows. As well as SQL databases and NAS appliances Daily backup copies are encrypted and sent offsite as part of Information Technology Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity Plan.
  • Quest vRanger: is a centralized backup solution for virtual servers in the VMware environment. Backups are run daily and retained for 30 days.
  • Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager (DPM): is a centralized, policy-based enterprise solution that backups and restores the following operating systems: Gables based Microsoft Windows servers and fileservers, Virtual servers in the Hyper-V environment, SQL servers and MS Exchange. Critical servers are replicated daily to Disaster Recovery backup servers in another Datacenter. Monthly backup copies are encrypted on tape and sent offsite as part of Information Technology Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity Plan.
  • Azure Cloud Backups: As more virtual servers become candidates for cloud hosting, it was necessary to establish a backup solution to protect against data corruption, user error, ransomware attacks, etc. Microsoft guarantees availability of the data by replicating it among sites but data recovery from client’s request is not available. Currently two forms of backup are in place for Azure hosted servers.
    1. PowerShell script scheduled to run daily which creates a snapshot of virtual servers in Azure’s blob storage.
    2. Azure Recovery services is a tool recently made available by Microsoft. Still lacks in functionality but it is designed specifically to protect servers hosted in Azure resource manager.

Restrictions

  • Tivoli Storage Manager:
    • Required: Based on client's needs and requires supervisor approval.
    • Network based backup solution.
  • Quest vRanger:

Costs

  • Costs for backup services are assessed individually per-request. For projects involving UMIT managed servers and storage, backup costs are typically included in the overall price.
  • There may be instances where the backup infrastructure will need to be enhanced to support a backup request. In these cases, there may be a backup cost associated with the project.
