Partnering with business owners, data custodians, and users, the Decision Support Technology unit’s role is to provide services in Business Intelligence. Business Intelligence is a set of methodologies, processes, architectures, and technologies that transform raw data into meaningful and useful information used to enable more effective strategic, tactical, and operational insights and decision-making.
In order to provide nontechnical users the ability to access information easily and from a single source of truth, we support the use of an enterprise data warehouse environment. Our current environment leverages the data from the University’s administrative systems and delivers information in reports using Microstrategy and the Research Reporting System. With the implementation of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) applications, we anticipate future development of the Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition platform.
Information Technology manages a data warehouse for the University community. Our current environment leverages the data from the University’s administrative systems and delivers Information in reports using Microstrategy and the Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition (OBIEE). The Data Warehouse is a set of databases that can be used to prepare reports from data for which the user has authorized access. The key feature of data warehouses is that the tools to prepare reports are very user-friendly (web-based, using point-and-click technology). The warehouse includes data from major University systems - financial, student, human resources, and space management. The data warehouse solution is composed of two parts: the data repository component and the reporting and analysis tool set. The benefits of this combined solution are:
OBIEE will eventually replace the Microstrategy reporting tool; Student Admission, Current Student Reporting and Course and Enrollment data are already transitioned to OBIEE. Future development will include Human Resources, Financial and other data. For additional information, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
Requesting access to the Data Warehouse: The University has established an institution-wide system of computer data and information. University employees and faculty members are given certain types of access to certain databases consistent with their position and job responsibilities.
All system users must keep information obtained from system access confidential except as otherwise necessary to perform the task assigned. In all instances authorized system users and restricted access system users are responsible for having knowledge of and complying with all laws and University policies relative to confidentiality.
Access to the Data Warehouse requires a signature to indicate acceptance of the University of Miami data access policies. Additionally, access must be approved by the appropriate Data Custodian for most systems. The Controller’s office must approve access to Financial Records.
