Gmail for Student Email is Here!

  • Based on feedback provided by UM students in the 2023 IT client satisfaction survey, students indicated a preference for Gmail as their email system. On August 1, 2024, students transitioned from Outlook to Gmail for University of Miami email.

Microsoft Teams Update to New Version

  • In early January 2024, Microsoft automatically updated the Microsoft Teams desktop application to new Teams. The new Microsoft Teams app was reimagined from the ground up for a faster, simpler, and more flexible experience. (Note: As of April 1, 2024, the new Teams client has been automatically installed for users who are still using classic Teams.)

Yahoo Mail App May Have Inadvertently Deleted Messages from Synced Accounts

  • Yahoo recently announced they identified an issue that may have caused synced emails to appear deleted in Yahoo Mail app inboxes, starting on October 25, 2023. These messages appear to have been deleted internally, and the syncing process then caused emails in Office 365 or Exchange Online email accounts to also be deleted.

Microsoft Teams Live Events Retirement

  • After September 30, 2024, Teams Live Events will no longer be supported, and access will be discontinued. Teams Live Events users will not be able to schedule, start, or join any events after this date.

Changes to Email Links in Outlook for Windows Opening in Microsoft Edge

  • Microsoft has implemented a new feature in Outlook for Windows computers, where email links now open in Microsoft Edge instead of your default web browser. If you prefer to open email links in your default web browser rather than Edge, you can adjust the setting within Outlook.

  • While working remotely, the recommended tool to access and manage UM email on a mobile device is the Outlook mobile app. We invite you to check out the following great features available on the Outlook mobile app.

Outlook Tips: How to Ensure You're Sending Messages to a University of Miami Email Address

  • To ensure the correct email address is used for all University-related business, we ask that you pay special attention to the email address displayed when sending messages to faculty, staff, and students. You can quickly verify that you're sending to the correct email address via Outlook by clicking on the person's name when it auto-completes in the "To:" field, and the email address being used will be displayed.

Improved Email Security at The U: Legacy Email Protocols have been Disabled

  • Microsoft will no longer support email connections using the Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP), Post Office Protocol (POP), and Basic Authentication legacy protocols.

Text Message Notifications Feature in Outlook on the Web has been Retired

  • If you are currently using Outlook on the Web (OWA)'s text message notifications feature for University of Miami email, please be advised that Microsoft retired this feature in OWA on September 30, 2020; however, notifications are available via the Outlook mobile phone app (on Android and iOS).

Login Experience for Office 365 Applications and Services

  • A University-wide login experience has been enabled for all Office 365 applications and services, including email via Outlook on the web, OneDrive, Teams, and SharePoint sites.
