Microsoft Announces Requirement for Outlook Users to have Updated Mobile Devices to Avoid Service Interruptions

Effective March 1, 2026, Microsoft will implement changes to how some mobile devices connect to University of Miami email via Outlook (Exchange Online). This update modernizes how mobile devices "talk" to the University’s email services.

What does this mean for me?

Most modern smartphones and up-to-date apps are already compatible; however, if you rely on an older mobile device or an outdated "native" email app (the one pre-installed on your phone), your email and calendar synchronization may stop working on March 1.

How to stay connected:

We recommend the following options to ensure you don't lose mobile email access:

  • Option #1 – Download the Microsoft Outlook Mobile App: This is the recommended solution. The Outlook app or iOS or Android uses a modern connection method that is unaffected by this change and offers the best integration with your University calendar.
  • Option #2 – Update Your Current Native Mobile Email App(s): If you prefer not to use the Outlook mobile app, you must ensure your device and native mail app(s) are current:
    • iPhone/iPad Users: Most iPhones from the last several years are already compatible. Apple’s "Mail" app has supported the necessary security standards since iOS 10, so any device running iOS 10 or later will continue to work.
    • Android Users: If you use the Gmail or Samsung Mail apps, visit the Google Play Store to ensure you have downloaded the latest updates.
    • Third-Party Apps: If you use a different email app, check with the provider to ensure it supports modern connection standards.
