Using Migrated Content in Canvas

Course Migration Overview

The University of Miami worked with Canvas and K-16 to migrate eligible Blackboard course content into Canvas. Migrated courses are content-only copies and are not connected to CaneLink or intended to be used directly for instruction.

Faculty can review migrated courses and import materials they want to reuse into their official Canvas course shells.

  • 2024–2026: Eligible Blackboard course materials were migrated into Canvas.
  • 2021–2027: Blackboard course resources, enrollment information, and grade records are being retained according to the University’s archival and record-retention procedures.

Using Migrated Content:

Migrated content may require updates or corrections before it is reused. Faculty who want to use migrated Blackboard materials should review the content, import the selected materials into their official Canvas course shell, and verify that everything functions correctly.

How Can I See Migrated Courses?

Access your migrated course content in Canvas!

  • Sign in at canvas.miami.edu with your University of Miami credentials.
  • Once signed in to Canvas, select Courses and then All Courses.
    • Migrated courses are clearly marked as "migrated" in both the course ID and name.
    • For 2025 courses: Review a Migration Exception Log for anything that will require fixing manually. Access Pages, and All Pages, then click Migration Exception Log

Please note:

  • You can modify course material or copy it into your active course shell and make changes as needed.
  • Review guidance on items that migrate automatically and those that require manual transfer.

Reviewing Migrated Content

K-16 was used to migrate eligible 2025–2026 Blackboard courses while preserving supported content such as course structures, quizzes, and question pools.

Canvas’ standard migration service was used to transfer eligible 2024 courses. Although most course content migrated successfully, differences between Blackboard and Canvas may require some materials, settings, or tools to be manually adjusted.

Possible Manual Adjustments:

Use the guide below to understand how common Blackboard items may appear in Canvas and identify content that requires additional review. Migrated items generally fall into one of three categories:

Expected to work May need adjustment, or  Requires manual correction or rebuilding.
